Real vs. Fake – Picking the Perfect Christmas Tree

It’s that time of the year again – Christmas time. What says Christmas better than a Christmas tree. For those of us who celebrate Christmas, the Christmas tree has been a generations-old staple. Every year, millions of people wrestle with the age-old question regarding their Christmas trees – real or fake?

Truth is that there are advantages to both types of Christmas trees. For example, fake, or artificial, trees allow you the opportunity to decorate as early as you please. You don’t need to worry about drying needles. You can also set up a few trees in your home of various sizes. Artificial trees range from mini table-toppers to 10-foot-plus centerpieces.

Some people love to put up their trees as early as November 1st. We’re not saying we advocate for or against that. When it comes to Christmas trees, it’s really a personal choice. Of course, others like to leave their trees up well past December 25th. Some folks keep their trees up year-round and would thus require an artificial tree. They last longer.

The other big selling point for an artificial, or fake, Christmas tree is that they lend themselves really well to design trends. For example, you can dress up an all-white tree like a snowman or have mini-themed trees that kids can decorate as they wish. Real trees come in certain colors and sizes and can’t be customized nearly so easily.

People who like natural, or real, Christmas trees often say that it’s because it feels like a bit of nature is in their home during the holiday season. To them, nothing beats the experience of picking a real tree. These trees spread the classic evergreen scent throughout the home, often for the entire holiday season. You can also sustainably mulch or recycle them for firewood. Some real trees get repurposed as fish habitats in lakes.

Some families make it a tradition to go to a tree farm and pick out a tree. It’s an important part of their holiday rituals. The visit is an opportunity for family members to connect with each other and nature.

Regardless of whether you choose a real or fake Christmas tree, the important thing is that the tree fits in with your needs and goals for the season. There’s no right or wrong way to do this. It’s whatever works for you.
